I have been listening to this band called Death all week and they are incredible. You can listen to them on tidal using the link. The name of the band doesn’t really reflect the emotion of the music. The band was a family of musicians that started in the 70’s and they called the band death because their father died around the time when they formed. They wanted to memorialize their father and the brothers wanted to challenge the negative associations around the word Death. Could they change the word into something positive with their music?
Anyways, this little story gives you an idea about how ambitious they were and the emotions they wanted to express, and the music shows both their technical prowess and their forceful, but optimistic emotionality. Their sound fits right in with led zepplin and their soaring compositions are a challenge to the form of rock and roll, they sound a lot like radio head. The music is undeniably punk, or maybe before punk? Kind of proto-punk in the way that you would describe MC5, but the vastness of the sound, the lovely melodic vocals and the song composition bring much more to the driving punk energy. There are places in the songs where you can easily imagine violins or a gospel chorus maybe if they had had higher levels of production. I’ve heard there is a documentary about them and I can’t wait to see it!
